Fun new activity on Altissia – discover its linguistic and pedagogical advantages!

2 February 2024

We’re excited to announce our latest innovation on our learning platform: a fun activity for exploring new words in an amusing way.

What is it?

The activity consists of a daily challenge: find as many words in the language you’re learning as possible in 90 seconds, from 15 randomly chosen letters. At the end of the game, players will see a summary of the words found with their definitions and pronunciation. Players are given a final score based on 1 point per letter for all the words they found.

What are the linguistic and pedagogical advantages?

  • Contrary to games that require a certain language level to be played, this activity was designed to be accessible to all levels, from beginner to advanced.
  • Progress through trial and error enables learners to take an active role in their learning by daring to make mistakes.
  • It encourages exploration of vocabulary. By rewarding longer words, the game encourages its players to try out combinations and, in doing so, discover new words, thus expanding their vocabulary in an enjoyable way. It’s also a good way to grasp underlying mechanisms of the study language through inflected forms of words.
  • It adds a dimension of challenge and competition. As the activity is timed, learners are encouraged to beat their personal bests for finding the most words possible in the allotted time. Learners can also view the high score of the day out of everyone on the platform, and display the words found by the player with that day’s current highest score in their study language. This feature means any curious learners can even discover new words.
  • It contains integrated pedagogical features. At the end of the game, learners can view the words they found, listen to the pronunciation, and discover the definitions and examples for better comprehension.

Available every day, the game can become a motivating habit for learners, encouraging them to come back to the platform and broaden their learning in other modules at the same time. As it isn’t linked to any particular level or learning path, it can be played independently by any learner.

By adding this game to our platform, we aim to diversify the types of language learning available, by making it not only educational, but fun and engaging. Although learning can sometimes be synonymous with effort, with our daily challenge, it can be a pleasure!
